Nasal Sinuses

The human head has 4 pairs of paranasal sinuses that open into the nose. The sinuses warm and humidify the air we breath through our nose. They also provide a nice resonance to our voice, and decrease the weight of the skull due to their hollow structure. Infections of nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses are common, and more than 12% of the population suffer from sinusitis. Infections in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses can be caused by viruses, bacteria or fungi. Allergic and structural factors (e.g. deviated nasal septum and nasal polyps) can lead to more frequent and longer lasting infections. Bacterial sinusitis is initially treated by nasal sprays, irrigation, and oral antibiotics. Sinus surgery is mainly reserved for patients with structural abnormalities and nasal polyps.

   Facts about paranasal sinuses:

  • It is estimated that yearly there are 3 million missed work days in Saudi Arabia because of sinusitis.

  • More than 98% of sinus infections are caused by viruses and are self resolving.

  • Deviated nasal septum is one of the leading causes of nasal obstruction.

  • Sinus surgeries are now exclusively done with small nasal endoscopes without the need for any external skin incisions.
